ResearchResearch into biofuels today can be broadly classified in three categories: research into biodiesel, research into ethanol, or research into biomass. Each of these three areas of research is unique and has its own set of challenges. The links above to the right provide further information into each of these research areas along with information about the benefits of using biofuels such as environmental benefits and economic benefits. Not only can the use of biofuels improve upon emissions of greenhouse gases through cleaner burning, but by domesticating the production of biofuels like ethanol and biodiesel, millions of new jobs could be created in the United States. The purpose of research into ethanol is to find new more efficient ways of producing it so that minimal energy is used in the production process. The same can be said about biodiesel research, while the traditional feedstock that biodiesel is produced from is soybeans, new feedstocks, such as algae and poplars, are currently being investigated by scientists throughout the world. While biomass is an older type of renewable energy (it has been used for thousands of years), the research dedicated to this field of energy is in the interest of finding new more efficient ways of producing energy from biomass such as wood. Each of the links above holds information about the major academic and government research facilities that are working on these research areas and can provide more in depth information about each topic.
